Earthing & Bonding

Earthing provides a safe path for electrical current to flow to the ground in case of a fault, preventing electric shocks. Bonding connects metallic parts like pipes and structural elements to the earth, ensuring they're at the same electrical potential and eliminating shock risks.

Proper earthing and bonding are critical for electrical safety. They prevent electric shocks, reduce fire risk, ensure protective devices work correctly, and are legal requirements. Without them, metal fixtures and pipes can become live and dangerous.

Main bonding connects incoming services like gas and water pipes to the earth. Supplementary bonding in bathrooms connects all metallic parts including pipes, baths, radiators, and metal window frames to prevent potential differences that could cause shocks.

Professional testing measures earth loop impedance and bonding continuity. Signs of inadequate earthing include frequent RCD tripping, tingling sensations from metal fixtures, or visible corrosion on earth connections. Regular EICR inspections check earthing systems.

Main bonding connects incoming services at the consumer unit to the main earthing terminal. Supplementary bonding connects metallic parts in specific locations like bathrooms where the risk of electric shock is higher due to water presence.

Modern installations with RCD protection may not require supplementary bonding if certain conditions are met. However, older properties or those without RCD protection must have supplementary bonding. We can assess your specific requirements during an inspection.
