Smoke & Heat Alarm Installation

Since 2022, all homes in England must have working smoke alarms on every floor and heat alarms in kitchens. Landlords must ensure alarms are installed and working at the start of each tenancy. Homeowners are responsible for maintaining their own alarms.

Smoke alarms detect smoke particles and are ideal for hallways and bedrooms. Heat alarms detect rapid temperature increases and are better for kitchens where cooking fumes could trigger false alarms from smoke detectors.

Mains-powered alarms with battery backup are recommended for reliability. They don't rely on battery changes and continue working during power cuts. Battery-only alarms are suitable for quick installations but require regular battery replacement.

Smoke and heat alarms should be replaced every 10 years, even if they appear to be working. The sensors degrade over time, reducing effectiveness. Check the manufacture date on your alarms and replace any over 10 years old.

While not legally required for existing homes, interlinked alarms are highly recommended for safety. When one alarm detects danger, all alarms sound throughout the property, providing earlier warning and more time to escape.

Installation costs vary depending on the number of alarms and whether they're mains-powered or battery-operated. Mains-powered installations require electrical work and typically cost £80-£150 per alarm including materials and labor.
