Surge Protection

Surge protection devices (SPDs) protect your electrical equipment from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes, power grid switching, or faulty appliances. Without protection, surges can damage or destroy expensive electronics, computers, and appliances instantly.

Surges are caused by lightning strikes, power grid switching, large appliances turning on/off, faulty wiring, or utility company equipment failures. Even small surges over time can degrade electronics, shortening their lifespan significantly.

Primary protection should be installed at the consumer unit to protect the entire property. Secondary protection at individual sockets protects sensitive equipment like computers, TVs, and home entertainment systems for comprehensive coverage.

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) require surge protection in most new installations and major alterations. It's mandatory where consequences of equipment failure could be serious or where equipment is particularly sensitive to surges.

Surge protection devices typically last 5-10 years depending on the number and severity of surges they absorb. Many SPDs have indicator lights showing when they need replacement. Regular inspection ensures continued protection.

While surge protection significantly reduces risk, no system offers 100% protection against direct lightning strikes. However, properly installed SPDs protect against 99% of common surges, saving thousands in equipment replacement costs.
